Building the Perfect Horse Arena with KAMCO®

Essential Conditions for Long-Term Performance

At KAMCO® Arenas, building a horse arena is never just about laying down sand — it’s about creating a purpose-built surface where both horse and rider can perform at their best. Whether you’re training at home or preparing for competition, the right arena transforms your riding experience. But delivering the perfect arena means getting the fundamentals right — from location and drainage to surface materials and layout. Every choice counts. Here’s what to consider before breaking ground.

Why the Right Arena Matters

An arena isn’t just a flat space — it’s the foundation for safer training, better communication between horse and rider, and long-term soundness. A well-built KAMCO® arena:

  • Provides consistent, safe footing across seasons

  • Reduces strain on joints and soft tissue through quality surface layering

  • Creates an environment where horses feel secure and riders can focus

  • Adds significant value and functionality to your property

Whether it’s campdraft, dressage, show jumping or general riding, our arenas are tailored to your goals — and built to last.

Plan First, Dig Later

Every successful arena starts with a clear plan. At KAMCO®, we recommend thinking through:

  • Your Discipline & Use: Reining and campdraft arenas differ in construction from those built for jumping or flatwork. Tell us how you ride, and we’ll build accordingly.

  • Budget & Maintenance: Consider not just the build but ongoing maintenance — we’ll guide you on what’s realistic and sustainable for your site.

  • Access, Drainage & Zoning: Local topography, council guidelines, and access for machinery or floats can all impact the final design.

We always conduct a site visit before quoting — no guesswork, no surprises.

Choosing the Right Site

The land tells us a lot. When selecting where your arena should go, we assess:

  • Natural Drainage & Soil Type: Heavy clays or poorly draining areas create issues long after construction.

  • Slope & Orientation: A slight fall helps drainage. North–south orientation minimises sun glare.

  • Access & Surroundings: Clear access from stables or float parking makes daily use more efficient. Shelter from prevailing winds improves conditions year-round.

If the site’s not ideal, we’ll let you know — and we’ll work with what’s possible.

Getting Dimensions & Layout Right

We don’t do one-size-fits-all – we do:

  • Standard Discipline Sizes: From 60x20m dressage to larger 70x40m multipurpose spaces – all shapes and sizes.

  • Clear Zones: We allow for safe clearance, spectator areas, float access and can build round yards or warm-up rings.

  • Edging: We can install safe, durable edging withaccess points.

You tell us how you ride — and we design accordingly.

The Heart of the Arena: Surface & Footing

Footing can make or break your arena. We offer guidance on:

  • Sand Type: We use premium river sand that compact correctly and drain efficiently.

  • Blends & Additives: Fibre, rubber or wood blends may be appropriate depending on use, traffic and climate.

  • Base Construction: All KAMCO® arenas include a carefully compacted base to ensure longevity.

We don’t cut corners — it’s why our arenas last.

Drainage

Western Australia sees wild extremes — and drainage must be factored in from day one. We design for optimal water flow in all conditions.

Our base construction ensures your footing remains as stable as possible regardless of weather conditions.

Optional Features

While most of our builds are open-air, we can advise on Lighting systems, ventilation, fencing finishes, sprinkler systems, or edging for sand containment.

Each feature should serve your goals — not inflate the price without benefit.

Safety Isn’t Just Surface-Deep

Every KAMCO® arena is built with rider and horse safety in mind:

  • Secure footing depth across the entire surface

  • Minimal transitions between surfaces

  • Emergency access routes maintained

We follow the principle of “ride-ready from day one.” No shortcuts.

Long-Term Maintenance

Even the best arena needs upkeep.

  • Regular Grooming: Keeps footing level and prevents compaction

  • Moisture Management: Watering or sprinklers if needed, especially in WA’s dry heat

  • Checkups: You can bookin a KAMCO ProCare consultation, and we can revisit the arena post-construction to assess surface performance and provided required maintenance (fees apply).

We also provide post-build guidance to help you keep things running smoothly — whether you’re using a harrow, leveller, or need help diagnosing an issue.

Bringing Your Arena Vision to Life

At KAMCO® Arenas, we bring hands-on experience, honest advice, and proven construction methods to every project. We don’t use GPS, lasers, or gimmicks — just skilled craftsmanship, local knowledge, and a passion for getting it right.

Let’s build something extraordinary.
